This story was written as a family history record by my father, Doug Dawes, before he died in 2003, aged 83. It is a narrative of his wartime re-collections, written fifty years after these events. It starts with a schoolboy's visit to pre-war Germany and continues with his experiences with the Royal Artillery and Combined Operations at home and abroad in France, Belgium, Gibraltar, Algeria, Holland, Germany, Palestine and India.
He joined the TA as a Gunner in April 1939, aged 18, was mobilised in September 1939, aged 19, and was demobbed as a Major in 1946, aged 25.
I have typed up his handwritten notes and divided the continuous narrative into 18 named parts, adding a few available photographs.
