Although I knew that my Uncle Herbert had been lost at sea when his troop ship was sunk, I was only vaguely aware of the Army service of several of my relatives. So it came as a surprize to me that one of them, my Uncle Ernest had won the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal in the First World War and that my Grandfather had fought at Cambrai. However, the greatest effect on all our lives had been the death of my grandmother's first husband, killed at Ypres exactly three weeks after their wedding in 1917.
