Overcome your shyness
I moved to Denmark last year. I already had a very basic understanding of the language, but had intended to study in the country. I enrolled in the State Language School, and found the learning environment wonderful. Small classes and supportive teachers helped enormously. But I also recommend watching television, even in English, as the Danish subtitles helped a lot in getting a grip of the written language. When you then get to a stage when you can read a little, go crazy with the street press, newspapers and a good dictionary. Although it can be hard to overcome one's shyness, but the Danes love it when you try to speak their language and are usually very helpful. If not, most people speak very good English.

I found it's very hard to learn Danish. Especially in England, there are not many Danish courses available at all. I am familiar with the whole language leanrning experience, as I learnt English as my second language at school. I remember how hard it was for me to speak English at the first time. Even though I'd already had some knowledge of English, but somehow the words just seemed so hard to come out of my mouth. I felt like I got it wrong all the time, no one would understand me and I'm just gonna make a fool of myself ... Now it seems I have to start it all over again with Danish. I know it will be hard, but I also believe it gonna be fun. When I look back, after mastering English, I enjoy watching movies without subtitles, making friends from all over the world, graduated from Liverpool University ... another door in life has opened, the language gave me the key. It's brilliant!
I've been learning Danish for a couple of months, but with next to no courses near me, I'm forced to work it out myself. I decided to visit a friend in Denmark during my gap year which will hopefully get me some experience in using and hearing the language.
I'm really worried about it though - I know my accent isn't quite right and I get the feeling that will single me out. Does anyone know where/who I can go to to get some more instruction?
