Damn, missed! (German/English)

When I was young and innocent and had taken up my first German job teaching in a Gymnasium, grammar school, in Germany, I caused shock and then amusement with a class of thirteen year olds when I went to throw a piece of rubbish into the bin but missed. I only spoke English in class and as the paper flew past the bin onto the floor I said, 'Missed!' Unfortunately, the class thought I was speaking German and that I had said, Mist!, damn! Not what they expected from a polite Englishman!

My husband had the same experience when a man was jumping over a low dividing fence at the German/Austrian border and didn't quite make it. His "Missed" was not too welcome!
