A Bit Forward

13 years ago I moved to live in Paris and got a job in a fast food restaurant. One morning I found myself in a walk-in mop and broom cupboard with one of the manageresses. I asked her Qu'est-ce que tu veux me faire ? thinking I was asking her what she wanted me to do. In fact, not yet having grasped the notion of the subjunctive (I should have said Qu'est-ce que tu veux que je fasse ?). I had asked her : 'What do you want to do to me?' She went red, giggled and kindly corrected me. Problem was, I'd asked the same question every morning for 5 months and she was the first to put me right.
