Telling your dinner host you're pregnant instead of full? It's a common mistake, I was told afterward, but I think I win when it comes to setting. My fiance's family, and my family, are both native French speakers. However, I'm a native English speaker trying to learn French, and he's a native French speaker fairly fluent in English. We'd set up a dinner for our families to meet, and I'm sure you can imagine what happened next... I got a little cocky (maybe it was the wine) and having vaguely remembered something about "Je suis pleine" meaning "I am full" (I would later remember it being a website telling me NOT to use that phrase!), I proceeded to pat my bulging, full stomach with both hands and proclaim with a winning smile that I was pregnant! I wasn't, of course, but the reaction of two Catholic families was priceless.
Editor's note: Plein(e) can mean "pregnant" but only in calf or lamb for instance. Plein(e) is also the slang for being very drunk.
