First impressions count

One of my friends came back after having spent a week in Paris. He said to me: "It was nice, but I cannot understand why everyone looked so grumpy and angry every time I said "Hello!" to them". I asked him what word he had been using and he said salaud of course! Thinking he had been saying salut (which, by the way is not correct either, unless you know the person very well). No wonder they did not appreciate his greetings ... the French word salaud is a very insulting word only used by people who really want to show their disgust of others. It is as if you were to say "Bastard!" to everyone you met in the street! Not the best way to start a conversation ...
