Throat support

While studying in France with some other Americans, one of our lot got a rather stiff sore throat. He hadn't lived in the country very long, and as we passed a drug store, he asked, "How do you say 'cough drop'?" I couldn't resist the moment and told him the word was soutien-gorge. Literally translated, it would seem to mean "throat support" and that made sense to him. He had no idea that the word really means bra. He walked up to the druggist and asked for a soutien-gorge. The druggist's jaw dropped to the floor. Our friend asked again. The guy started shaking his hands in front of his chest, mimicking breasts. "We don't sell bras here!" We couldn't stop laughing, it was so funny!
