It's a love thing

I was having dinner with my girlfriend's relatives in Germany. Her grandmother had prepared a nice feast and I wanted to show my appreciation by telling her I liked it - but instead of saying Ich liebe das! - I like it!, I said: Ich liebe dich! In reply, my girlfriend's grandmother almost fell off her chair! What followed was a minute of silence and then a roar of laughter! I had actually said "I love you!"

The translation for I like it is ich mag es. To show your appreciation you would say: Mir schmeckt es sehr gut, it tastes really nice. Ich mag es/das would be more like I like this kind of dish.
