We surrender

After staying in Germany for a couple of months at the age of 17, at a dinner party with my boyfriend's older and well educated friends I told the whole table about a certain Danish politician's policies that involved releasing all army personel. His answering machine said "We surrender" - or as I told the dinner guests in German Wir übergeben uns. Everybody stared at me, and my boyfriend informed me that the correct phrase would probably be Wir ergeben uns, because no one really understood why on earth there should be an answering machine saying: "We are vomiting".

Actually, wir übergeben uns can also mean we're turning ourselves in, but the expression isn't typically used in situations like this where there's a possibility of confusing it with 'we're vomiting'.
