Phone home

When I arrived in Italy I only knew a few words. After having stayed a few months I picked up the language but still made many mistakes. One day I needed to make a phone call. In those days public phones were located in coffee bars and at tobacconists'. To make a call you needed to buy special coins from the counter. I went up to the lady behind the till and asked her for i genitori. She looked at me puzzled and I kept repeating my question looking ever more desparate. To this day I do not know what she must have thought ...The coins for public telephones were actually called i gettoni - but I was asking for my parents!
