Brooklands - a racing legend |
|
A massive stand was erected to accommodate 30,000 spectators on the hill in the middle. The clubhouse sported a domed rooftop observation tower, from where the entire circuit was seen. Today, it forms part of the museum that houses a wealth of cars and memorabilia - a showcase of racing car history.

But the Edwardian two-story clubhouse not only survives, it remains in constant use for regular racing club members' functions.
Only about a third of the track currently remains useable, although restoration is being carried out in places. Contemporary consumer demand has left its mark too, with a supermarket and industrial units interweaving through the track and its surroundings.
However, plans for future track reclamation are being formed - these will ensure the future for an important part of British racing heritage.
Tom Delaney, at the age of 92, is the oldest actively competitive racing driver in the world. He recalls his early days at Brooklands, and you can hear and read his reminiscences by clicking here.
