"Only after a very special race. The club had dinners, we had a very good bar, and upstairs we had a very good restaurant. And the drivers would meet there, well this would be after any race day other than any who couldn't stay for one reason or another but then when they organised a proper dinner in the evening of course everyone would be present plus other members of the club. It was very well run, we always had a good meal and then speeches afterwards. Earl Howe, he was the president of the club, he was a great speaker and very amusing too and others like Sammy Davies and Campbell (Sir Malcolm). Would invariably get up and give a few words. It was all very friendly - of course there weren't all that number of racing motorists and cars around those days."
