"There was the Canada trophy race; I came second in that - that was a blind round the outer circuit. I was leading for quite a way, when I got the signal from the pits to go faster, I went a bit faster. Then I got the signal again and I was going a bit faster each time, but I didn't want to harm the engine by going flat out unnecessarily for the whole distance. Then I saw a car coming up behind me, it was an Alvis, I thought I'd wait till he got level with me. He wasn't going all that faster and see what speed he's doing and then see whether I would match it or keep ahead of him without over revving my engine. Well, when he came alongside I found I was doing 4,950 revs a min - didn't like doing that for too long. So I decided to keep down to my 4,700, which the makers had said the engine wouldn't give me any trouble if I don't exceed it, so I thought I'd be content with 2nd place, but it was a jolly good race.
"Then there was another race round the mountain circuit. Raymond Mays another very well known driver was expected to be the winner when the race came of course, and I thought I'm not going to let him if I can possibly stop him. It was a handicap race it had been raining like hell before and so the track was very slippery and I had a bit of a start on him. But spun off at the first hairpin bend and the marshals wouldn't let me back on until the other cars had passed by. Mays was one of them well he was just about to come to the corner where I spun and I got away in front of him. And then we were going neck and neck for the rest of the race. I was going round the corners faster and accelerating away from the corners faster. He was gaining a bit on me on the long straights; he had a higher top speed. It was terrific race and I managed to win, by about a wheel!"
