Transcript

"Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral are together the World Heritage Site because they have such an importance in the history of Britain and also in the development of Christianity in Britain and in Western Europe. Of course, it was also the outpost of the English empire, which is another reason for saying that Durham is very special. The castle has many fine architectural features. Durham Castle actually has one of the most exquisite chapels in Britain, if not in Western Europe, in the Norman Chapel. The Norman Chapel of the Castle has many very special features, but particularly it has some very early carvings made by the Normans when they came to Durham. So the castle itself has some really special features which need to be recognised and this close connection with the cathedral and the Bishops, it made sense to have the cathedral and castle as part of one heritage site."
