Castles and Cannons |
|
There is a legend that Threave Island was the seat of Fergus and the ancient Lords of Galloway; and it has been suggested that Threave was the site of the castle burned by Edward Bruce, in 1308 after he defeated Roland and the Gallovidians (the name given to natives of the Galloway region). Indeed, excavations on the site during the 1970's unearthed a silver penny of Edward I, minted around 1300.
