During the 1950s the British Government was faced with a severe labour shortage in areas such as textiles and engineering. Building on links already made during the days of the British Empire it looked overseas to encourage foreign workers to come to Britain. This message was amplified by those Mirpuris who were already here, who saw work in England as a way of improving the economic prospects of both themselves and their families back home.
