Your Story: The Golden Pasty Award in Calumet MI, USA |
|
Residents at Still Waters preparing the ingredients for Cornish pasties. © Daryl Laitila, Pasty Central, Calumet, Michigan | The Community contributes to the tourism of the Great Lakes area through the Golden Pasty Award, the brainchild of Charlie Hopper, Administrator of the Still Waters Community. The Pasty Central website, with its wide contacts, seemed a good way of bringing to notice websites covering tourist attractions and local businesses noted for their technical excellence and their individual contribution to the economy of the area. Anyone can nominate a website. The staff at Still Waters make their assessment and if approved, give the website the Golden Pasty Award and a place on their Hall of Fame. Non-profit community groups also feature, including class reunions, Cub Scouts and Church groups.
While the Still Waters pasties contain traditional ingredients a business in Minnesota offers a pasty the like of which we have not yet seen even in the wide range on offer in Cornwall – the Breakfast Pasty, the ingredients being scrambled eggs, ham, potatoes and cheese.
It’s a far cry from the days when Calumet exported the whole of its copper production to Germany to the present day with pasties distributed to 50 States in the USA and shows what enterprise can achieve in fund-raising for a worthy cause.
