Your Story: The Golden Pasty Award in Calumet MI, USA

At the peak of mining activity in the early 1900’s some 70,000 people lived in Calumet. The last mine closed in 1968 and today the population is just over 800, made up of some 540 families. Calumet is situated in marvellous country near the shores of Lake Superior and tourism is now the staple industry.

For many years residents in the Still Waters Assisted Living Community in Calumet have made pasties as a regular activity, for their own consumption and selling some locally as a fundraiser. In 1995 Still Waters residents started selling their pasties on the Internet and as demand increased PastyNET Inc was incorporated in 1999. About 65 residents at the Home and 48 employees are now involved in the combined operation of producing and marketing the pasties.

At the turn of the century orders reached a sale of about 20,000 pasties a year. The number shipped now exceeds 100,000, much of the demand coming from repeat orders, with shipments made by a dedicated carrier to hundreds of cities and rural areas in 50 States. The pasties are shipped deep frozen with special packaging, which includes the Mining Gazette newspaper, a practical use for the preceding week’s issue and advertising for the paper.

The net proceeds, after expenses, are used to fund a building upkeep reserve account, and along with tax-deductable gifts enables repairs and furniture replacement to be made at the Still Waters Home, while the residents benefit by the realisation that they participate in something of significance for others throughout North America.
