Italians have been migrating to Northern Ireland since the 19th Century, and currently there are more than 1,600 people of Italian descent living there.

The numbers in the community might be relatively small, but this small community has had a large impact on one aspect of Ulster: its waistline! The Italians are well known for their food, particularly pizza, but that isn't what they will be remembered for in Northern Ireland.

The Italians brought with them many of our favourite culinary treats - The Fish Supper, fish with chips; a 'poke', ice cream in a cone; and 'sliders', a slab of ice cream between two wafers.

However, food wasn't the only thing they brought with them. The first wave of immigrants were skilled craftsmen, who used marble and stone to produce intricate patterns on flooring and walls of many of Belfast's buildings, including the City Hall. More...
