The land of hope not plenty |
 |
For many 18th and 19th Century immigrants the New World met and exceeded all their expectations. Religious freedom, a better quality of life, the chance to work for themselves, to own land and develop successful communities, free from the shackles of feudal overlords and class manipulation.
However, for members of a small village in Powys, Llanbrynmair, this wasn't the case. Although many of them remained in America, their vision of an idyllic Welsh paradise, in the form of a town called Beulah, never came to fruition. Hampered by external pressures such as the climate, the location and finally politics, Beulah never became the utopia they dreamed of, and is now little more than a memory. But what went wrong?
