St Helier - The fabled life of St Helier

Acta Sanctorum, written entirely in Latin, consists of 68 printed volumes of the lives of the saints, researched and published in Antwerp and Brussels by the monastic order, Société des Bollandistes.

The origins of the publication derive from works by Father Heribert

Rosweyde when he produced “Fasti sanctorum quorum Vitae in Belgicis bibliothecis manuscriptae”. The initial Acta were then produced in two volumes published in 1643.

They have proven to be a primary source for research into the societies and cultures of early Christian and medieval Europe. Our understanding of this era has largely relied on hagiographical literature [the writing of the lives of the saints] for over 300 years. In recent times, there has been a significant growth in interest in hagiographical records which highlights the appreciation of their value for historical research of the times. They record great detail of domestic and public life from the advent of the Christian era to the end of the 16th Century.
