Ask most people about the Brontë family and people will mention Charlotte, Emily, and Anne. Ask them about the other Brontë (who survived to adulthood) and they will either stare blankly at you, or shudder as they recall the tall-tales and legends of the Brontë male, Branwell.
Son of Patrick, brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne, Branwell is the black sheep of the family; the Brontë we don’t mention. Described by Mrs Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte’s biographer, as a “social demon”, was this young man really the personification of all things evil? Or a man whose character, whilst not pure as the driven snow, has been painted blackly because of the celebrity worship of his talented sisters by their, and his, biographers? More...
