Convicted-criminal Spence Broughton’s body hung, in chains, on Attercliffe Common in Sheffield for 36 years. Gibbeted as a deterrent to others against committing crime, Broughton became a popular attraction, with people flocking to Sheffield to see his body rotting away. Broughton is believed to be one of the last men in Yorkshire to be punished by this method; however his punishment provoked sympathy and curiosity rather than fear. More...
