From Jerusalem to Rosslyn?: The Templars in Scotland |

Since their dissolution following accusations of heresy in the 14th Century, the Knights Templar have been associated with some of the most mysterious and intriguing legends in history. Stories of secret treasure and hidden agendas are told, with many theorists believing that the Templars hid themselves and their treasure after their suppression and carried on as a secret organisation. Scotland’s link with the Templar mysteries is through Rosslyn Chapel in the village of Roslin near Edinburgh. Even though the chapel was built over a century after the formal suppression of the order, many believe that the ornate carvings in the chapel hold the key to the secrets of the Templars, and that Rosslyn may hold some of the Templars’ fabled treasure, said variously to include the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, lost teachings of Jesus or even the mummified head of Christ. Although I was raised a Catholic, a rebellious one, and do think it unfair what the Roman Church has done throughout history, I think it also unfair that the truth be witheld. If the power of the Roman Church is of such a magnitude and wishes to continue to subdue such truth then I am sure that there are those who would also be willing to protect such a cause. What would the Christ really have wanted?"

"It was the Templars who supported Bruce at Bannockburn and who earlier under the command of John Comyn had defeated the English heavy cavalry at the battle of Rosslyn. I find it very sad that few people relate the obvious reason this chapel was sited there was to commemorate that battle. It is equally sad that Bruce and his domination of history to suit his claim seems to have almost wrote this battle out of Scottish history, although in truth it is at least as great a victory as Bannockburn. It is equally mad to imagine as Mark Oxbrow above claims that the Templar order just ceased to be. It has existed since then as both a martial and masonic order, the Dukes of Atholl are amongst some of the past grand masters of that order. I would suggest to Mr Oxbrow if indeed he is a Glaswegian (which I doubt) to take a trip over to Knightswood and ask any of the locals there why it is so called. Failing this he may wish to take himself off into Ayrshire where he will find many ! lands which were owned by the Templars after Bannockburn, and which retain their connection to that order in their names to this day."

"There are well known Templar graveyards on the west coast of Scotland, such as is found near Loch Awe. In the North East there is of course a famous hotel (sorry can't advertise on the 大象传媒) which was a building owned by the Knights Templars. Mark Oxbrow seems keen to deny what is known and easily seen to anyone travelling in Scotland. He seems to be confused and accepts the 'Roman church' date of 1312 to mean that all Templars ceased to be as of that date. I could point out that Bannockburn was only 2 years after that date. We are mant to believe that an army of peasantry came from the hills and chased away the English army, when in other accoutns this was seasoned heavy cavalry (that is Templars) who came down and pursued the retreating English army. Although Edward as defender ! of the faith may well have been ordered to cease the Templar lands in England, that does not mean they ceased to be in other parts of Great Britain. Mr. Oxbrow seems to be the type who would claim that the Templars worshipped the Baphomet, as the Roman Church claimed while they stole their lands and wealth. This has been proven to be complete nonsense. It is known that the Templars sailed from France around 1312, where does Mr. Oxbrow suggest they went to besides Scotland? "

"Just finished reading Brown's "Da Vinci Code". It is the most thought provoking book I have ever read and I actually took notes so I could go onto the internet and search out for myself all this exciting book contained. I had to constantly remind myself it is FICTION! Rosslyn Chapel looks like what I imagined when I read the book. Must see it for myself some day."

"Rosslyn Chapel was built over a century after the destruction of the Templar Order. The only connection between Rosslyn and the Templars is that the St Clairs of Rosslyn testified AGAINST the Knights Templars when they were put on trial in Edinburgh in 1309."
