When i was 21 in 1940 I worked for my father who owned his own shop and workroom above the store. I worked in the store which was a general dealers store and a ships chandler. The store was located in South Shields, Tyne & wear. I worked from early in the morning till late at night, 7 days a week. I was paid 2 shiillings per week until i was 21 and then a rise to 5 shillings on condition I bought my own clothes! We sold large quanitities of food to be stored on ships for long voyages, we sold live animals, bedding and clothing which were used by the seaman. We attracted alot of foreign visitors to the store.
