Your Story: Marie's Nana's Story |
|
The washing had to be done in the wash house in the back yard, which had a large pot filled with water in buckets and heated by a fire beneath. The clothes were then put into a tub of hot water and pounded with a poss stick until clean, then hauled out and rinsed in cold water and finally put through a ringer to remove surplus water. If lucky and it was a fine day they would dry outside. IF raining they had to be dried indoors, hug anywhere to dry as there were no washing machines or dryers. To light the fire the old ashes had to be cleaned out first and the fire laid with crumpled newspaper, then skicks, then finally a shovel of coal. If it didn't burn up straight away the whole process had to be repeated. The meals were all home cooked, so there were meat and vegetables to be prepared. The baby to bath, feed and change. A lot of people my age called it the Good Old Days and how much happier they were then. I will tell you something, they must have had pretty miserable lives since.
