Your Story: Marie's Nana's Story

I was 21 in 1953,I had been married 3 years and had a baby boy of 11 months. My husband worked as a builders labourer. He was employed by the council and was working on Brockley Whins Estate. We lived in a two roomed flat with direct access from the street to the bedroom. There was a gas stove in the living room and a coal fire.A small area under the stairs served as a scullery with a sink and a cold water tap.The toilet and wash house were in the back yard both shered with the family up stairs, although we did have our own coal houses. The war had been over nearly 7 years but there were still stuff that was rationed, such as butter, sugar and bacon. Most other things were in short supply too. I didn't go out to work, it just was not done. My day consisted of washing nappies, cooking meals and doing the house work. The floors had to be swept with the brush as there were no vacuums, the floor was then washed as there were no fitted carpets. Just lino and rugs. More...
