Vinegar

We were all pretty plump and we used to try out all the inventions to get slim, you know as a group of girls would, and we`d read in a book you know that drinking vinegar would make you slim, and we decided that we`d all save up and buy a bottle of vinegar and headed up to the wee house, what you would call the ladies toilet, and every so often would go up and get a drink of the vinegar you know. And he started to think he (manager) could smell chips in the place, and so did the workers, cos we were trying to keep it a secret you know, and of course he had a search made and found a half empty bottle of vinegar, in what you called the wee house and threatened to sack the doffers that were using it, but there was a loyalty like, nobody would give away on you.

Again, we read that if you got a box of matches , dropped them and kept stoopin up and down for them, we`d all get thin, and we did try this too, you know, and we were faithfully doing it for two weeks when he (manager) caught us on again, and he did sack us, but only for an hour. He put us out, and during that hour the ordeal was terrible in case we`d get the sack.

The doffing mistress, she was an auld imp, really an auld imp. If she saw you eatin a sweetie, she`d have of come up and asked you what you were eatin, and you`d a had a bag of sweeties in yer pocket – we were terrified of her. With a bag of sweeties in yer pocket, she`d have kept them. And we were afraid of asking for them back.

Doffing Mistress songs plays out….
