Description

John Hanse

1947-88

The trams maybe had a capacity of one hundred passengers, upstairs and down. But there would be 120 people, some of them inside , strap hanging, but there would be others, standing on a semi circular steel bumper , front and back, and they would stan don the back bumper of the tram and when the conductor tried to come along to collect his 3 half pennies fair, as it was then, these people used to leap off and get on the next tram, rather than pay the money. And if one tram stopped suddenly, the tram behind might collide with it. Sometimes people got their foot caught in between the bumpers and if that man didn`t have a ticket people from inside the tram used to hop out, press a ticket into his hand, and then the man was intitled to compensation.
