Description

Derek Dougan 1955

My Mum got me a big pair of boots, because of the safety aspect , to protect my feet, from maybe breaking a toe, because I was into the football. So I was standing talking and this one guy was attracting my attention and I was really involved in a conversation and he was cracking a few jokes and suddenly a welder came up behind me, sneaked up and just went - `sssst sssst` , and I went to move and I couldn`t move cos my boots were welded to the base of the ship. By the time I was an apprentice down there, I was a regular member of Distillery`s first team.

Probably going into the shipyard was the biggest incentive I`ve ever had in my entire life to get out of it.
