Borders textile industry |
|
During recent years, many of the Borders textile mills have closed. The trend has been towards more mass production, and to lighter, man made fabrics than tweed. In 1981, 7800 people were employed in the textile industry. By 1998, this figure was only 4400, with around 2000 jobs having been lost from 1991 to that date. However, the industry remains important to the economy of the Borders and to the economy of Scotland in general, with the reputation for quality that was earned during the Border mills’ heyday in the 19th Century persisting today.
