"We
used to go every Monday night to The Variety, first house performance
at half past six and sit in the back stalls of the pit.
You would have Wilson, Keppel and Betty. It was a sand-dance act,
two men and a girl. They used to do a soft shoe shuffle dance routine
and they used to dress up in fez. They had plush seats and regulars
who had boxes. We had Harry Lauder, I remember Lucan and McShane
quite regularly.
The
Pivvy, The Pavilion in Lodge Lane, up in the gods, I remember seeing
Arthur Askey. The Pavilion became available. It was the original
theatre, old dressing rooms were here, old posters with Gracie Fields’
name on them, George Formby, The Beatles appeared a few times and
Ken Dodd appeared a dozen times."
