Spirit of Friendship Festival Events

Shisha Sri Lanka - Crafty Thoughts

The University of Liverpool Art Gallery
The 1st group exhibition in the UK of work by 8 leading contempory Sri Lankan artists. Crafty Thoughts presents a range of works that play off the provocative relationship between high and low art. Ranging from plasercine models and terracotta sculptures to photographs and textile based installations.
British Waterways Boat Arrivals
6 July - 25 July
Castlefield, Piccadilly Basin, Salford Keys
Up to 300 boats will arrive in the city centre during games time, the biggest gathering Manchester has ever seen on water. Arriving via Ashton, Bridgewater and Leeds/ Liverpool Canals. To celebrate and encourage the use our waterways.
Waterfire

Manchester - Piccadilly Canal Basin
Will attract 6000 people to British Waterways finale to their Aquafest feature to encourage the use of the regenerated inland waterways. Community event featuring performances with commonwealth theme and a firework finale.
Chandrika - Silver Ornaments of India

Kendal - Brewery Arts Centre
Chandrika Silver Ornaments of India brings together for the first time rarely seen silver objects from India. The collection comprises of a stunning array of beautiful silver jewellery and other items from the Chandrika Foundation in Jaipur, India.

Swim the Commonwealth Challenge

Blackburn with Darwen - Pools in the area
Challenge to swim from any of the Commonwealth Games countries to Manchester before the end of the games. Includes all levels of swimmer to log their distances at pools throughout the region.

Our Commonwealth

Bolton - Museum, Art Gallery & Aquarium
Celebrates the achievements of a sparkling array of poets drawn from across the Commonwealth. Using unique material from the Ryland鈥檚 collection of modern literacy archives, this exhibition tells the remarkable story of how Carcanet Press, a small publishing house in the Northern City of Manchester, has listened to these voices over the past thirty years and given them a permanent life in print.

Exhibition of children's sculpture, drawings and paintings of imaginary cities displayed at a gallery of international reputation.
The Dunham Massey Maize Maze
13 Jul - 15 Sep
Altrincham - Dunham Massey
Based at redhouse farm next to Dunham Massey. The maze will be sown in the form of a grid and the design will be pegged out in the shape of the three c/w athletes. After closure grain will be harvested and fed to local farm animals.
Tales of Power - West African Textiles

Whitworth Art Gallery
Ritual, tradition, spirituality and magic are explored in this display of West African textiles with a difference, offering a radical retelling of Macbeth as a Yorath story of kings, war, and conflict.
Blackpool Queen's Golden Jubilee Family Festival
Summer 2002
Blackpool - Stanley Park
Major family festival celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The festival will include the Howard Haigh and Sounds 18-piece orchestra playing in the bandstand. There will also be street-theatre, local bands (performing in a marquee), participatory music workshops and taster sessions, horticultural show, displays, activities etc.
String of Pearls

Prominent buildings along the river Thames in London will take part. They will be specially lit and opened for public viewings with some offering special Jubilee activities such as exhibitions etc.
