In training for the 10k: Jonathan Haggart |

I've
been full of bravado about taking on a run for a couple of years now.
Despite my bulging 16 stone frame I bragged I could get around with
ease. An idle boast, because there wasn't a run in Manchester, so
it was dinner table talk only.
And then they announced the Great Manchester Run! Find
out more >>>There was no escape, the money had to
go where the mouth had ventured!
There was no way that I was going through this alone, so I signed
up a colleague, then another, and before I knew it we had 11 people
running from the same firm of accountants, CLB. We'll all be wearing
our t-shirts on the day!
I guessed that I would have to do some training so, rather like the
revision timetable I make during exams, as a delaying tactic I went
out in the car and measured a course. then the next day I checked
the distance. Initially I measured a lap around my house of three-quarters
of a mile. Sadly, there was an escape route at about half that distance
which I readily used and still came home panting. It was apparent
quite early that I had much to learn and only 6 weeks in which to
learn it.
This really hit home when I discovered Peter
Elliott's training schedule on the 大象传媒 website. My God! I
don't think that this was designed for the likes of me. It assumes
that the reader has some ability to run in the first place. So that
was ignored! Instead I took valuable advice from my friends to start
easy and build it up slowly and I was going nicely until I missed
a week because of a cold.
Subsequently though, I've surprised everyone, none more so than myself,
by nicely stepping up in distance every few days and have crossed
the 4 mile barrier. This is, of course, a long way from the 6.25 on
the day, but will power will see me through. Success for me will be
to get to the Imperial War Museum without stopping...anything past
there is a bonus.
Hopefully there will be lots of people on the route telling me to
get my lazy backside moving and I'll run all the way! Whether I'm
non-stop or not, I definitely intend to finish within the two hours
before the roads re-open. I don't fancy fighting the bank holiday
shoppers for pavement space on Deansgate.
It also helps that I haven't had a drop of alcohol since the end of
January - and lost a stone because of it. Initially this was because
of an infection, but since it's become a test of my will, to see just
how long I can go. The 16 weeks so far is probably the longest time
I've gone without since I ran that first 10k 17 years ago!
