Old Moor lies on the site of an old colliery and is within a stone's throw of a busy business park.

At first it doesn't look like the most promising nature location but Old Moor is literally a birders' paradise.

Autumn - Flocks of Golden Plovers and Lapwings.


Winter - Bird feeding garden - Greenfinches, Goldfinches and Tits on the feeders. Flocks of Golden Plovers and Lapwings. Peregrine Falcons.

Summer - Tufted Ducks, Snipe, Greylag Goose.

Spring - Goldeneyes, Cuckoo and Warblers.

Scheduled events throughout the autumn months including fungi forays and bird watching for beginners.

Five wildlife hides. Two easy-going trails on the reserve.

Throughout the year the RSPB and Birdlife International have a scheme where you can donate your old binoculars or scope and they'll improve them and send them to conservation projects around the world.

Access:

Disabled access: Designated disabled parking bays in the lay-by next to the car park. Wheelchairs/powered vehicles available for hire.

Trails are wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Good paths to all hides providing views over 250 acres of diverse habitat. Wheelchair accessible viewing areas available in all hides.

Disabled toilets available on the ground floor next to the visitor centre entrance. Visitor centre and shop accessible for wheelchair users.

Getting there:

Leave the M1 at junction 36 and take the A61 (Barnsley). Go straight ahead on the A6195 (Doncaster) at the small roundabout. Drive for about four miles until just after the Morrison's supermarket - then follow the RSPB Old Moor signs.


If travelling on the A1 leave at junction 37 (Doncaster) and follow the A635 towards Barnsley. Then follow the RSPB Old Moor signs.

Opening times:

Opening times: 1 November - 31 January: visitor centre open 9.30am-4pm. Gates open until 4.30pm.

1 February-31 October: visitor centre open 9.30am-5 pm. Gates open until 5.15pm. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Charges:

Entrance charges: Adults 拢2.50; Children 拢1.25; Family ticket 拢5; Concessions 拢2. RSPB members free. Free to Barnsley Council 'Passport to Leisure' cardholders.
