Welney in East England provides a perfect wetland for over-wintering birds.

Wild swans arrive every autumn from their breeding grounds in Iceland and the Arctic tundra.

The reserve was originally established for Bewick's Swans, the smallest and rarest of the three species of wild swan in the UK.

Peatlands

  • Peatlands Park is a rich bog habitat that is a wildlife gold mine for plants, insects, birds and mammals.

"Wetlands are a haven for birds, mammals and insects especially in the autumn.

"These days we've got some fantastic restored wetlands - places where human effort has brought the wildlife alive. And they're especially good spots for watching wintering birds."
