    NHS workers arriving to shop at Morrisons in Wetherby this morning have been presented with flowers by staff.

    The supermarket has introduced an NHS hour between 07:00 and 08:00.

    Julia Rushworth, who works at Chapel Allerton hospital in Leeds, says she was presented with the flowers by a staff member as she entered the shop.

    Ms Rushworth says: "As I left the shop a lovely old man waiting outside said ‘Where do you work? Good on you'.

    "It made me quite emotional."

    McDonald's will close all 1,270 of its restaurants in the UK by the end of Monday, as fears over the spread of coronavirus escalate.

    Nando's has also said it has closed its approximately 400 restaurants in the UK "until further notice".

    Both chains said they wanted to protect the staff and customers during the coronavirus outbreak.

    On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said restaurants and cafes must close, but exempted take-away food places.

  3. Witness appeal after motorcyclist dies in A1401 crashpublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2020

    A motorcyclist has died after crashing on the A1401 in North Yorkshire.

    The incident happened at about 20:00 on Sunday just outside Carlton, near Selby.

    North Yorkshire Police said the motorbike had been travelling out of the village towards Snaith when it crashed. No other vehicles were involved.

    The 27-year-old rider died at the scene.

    The force has appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dash cam footage of what happened to come forward.

  4. Coronavirus: Hospital in urgent appeal for volunteerspublished at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2020

    A North Yorkshire hospital has put out an urgent appeal for volunteers to help during the coronavirus outbreak.

    Harrogate District Hospital said it was looking for support staff after a number of existing volunteers decided to stand down.

    The hospital says it's looking for support staff for administrative and manual handling roles.

    Volunteers need to be aged between 16 and 70, not be pregnant and have no underlying medical conditions.

    Volunteer services manager Andrew Forsyth said: "It's amazing how flexible our volunteers can be and we are missing them greatly during what is a busy time.

    "Whilst we will welcome them back when this is over, we have some important gaps to fill. We thank you in advance for your support."

    Car parks at all Yorkshire Water owned reservoirs have been shut after "unprecedented" numbers of visitors over the weekend.

    The water provider said it was taking the step in order to help maintain social distancing guidelines brought in to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

    On Twitter the firm said: "Hopefully it won’t be for too long but we need to keep everyone safe during these challenging times."

    Meanwhile on Saturday the chief executive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority David Butterworth "beggars belief" as social distancing guidance was flouted.

    "The number of people coming to the area and acting so irresponsibly at a time of national crisis cannot be acceptable," he said.

    "If people chose to come here and ignore government advice regarding social distancing, then I would suggest they do not travel to the Yorkshire Dales at all and stay at home."

    A man in his 60s has died in East Yorkshire after testing positive for coronavirus.

    The man, who has not been identified, is the first patient to have died in East Yorkshire after being diagnosed with the virus.

    Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said he was being treated in Castle Hill Hospital, in Cottingham, and had underlying health conditions.

    The trust's chief executive Chris Long said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family at this difficult and distressing time."
