The Mayor of Leicester has said if the government had provided it with "useful data" earlier, local officials could have prevented the current local lockdown.

Sir Peter Soulsby said the city council now knows about 10% of the city recorded a higher transmission of the virus.

"If we had known that weeks ago we could've actually dealt with it at that time and prevented this lockdown," he said.

"It's very clear when you look at the data that it's a couple of areas of the city that have got a higher than the average transmission of the virus, and certainly the way in which the city has been locked down in its entirety, and indeed beyond our boundary, is not justified.

"We should have been able to know this many, many weeks ago and we should have focused on those areas, preventing the transmission there."

A fashion brand is investigating claims one of its Leicester-based suppliers has used a subcontractor at the centre of allegations over breaches to the national living wage.

Quiz said it is "extremely concerned" by a report in the Times over the weekend that its clothes are being made in a factory where prospective staff are being paid as little as £3 an hour.

An undercover reporter for the newspaper said she had been told by factory bosses that she would need to work unpaid for two days before getting a job that would pay between £3 and £4 an hour.

It comes just a week after similar allegations took more than a third off the share price of Boohoo.

The bird, more used to the Alps, has ended up on the Derbyshire and Yorkshire border.
