Rhod Gilbert - mining his Welsh roots
Whimsical, surreal stories drawing on his Welsh roots are at the core of Rhod's comic style - and it's a humour that travels well. Cape Town, Melbourne and Auckland have witnessed the Gilbert wit as have more unconventional comedy outposts like Basra and Taiwan.
Recently seen on 大象传媒 Three's 'Comedy Shuffle', Rhod tours Britain this year with his new show 'Knocking on Heaven's Door'.
Q1. What would be your top tips to any would be stand up comedian?
Being original helps. Have fun - if you have fun an audience has fun.

Q2. How do you cope with hecklers?
Live performance is the easy bit. Hecklers? I couldn't care less. The writing's the hard bit.

Q3. Can a stand up act work on TV?
Stand up comedy doesn't work on TV in my view, but 大象传媒 Three came up with this idea that put me in a pub environment telling my little stand-up surreal stories and everyone ignoring me.

Q4. How can a comedian cross over from stand up to radio?
'Jest a Minute' was a radio panel format where I asked comedians about comedy. It was the most fun I had on anything.

Q5.There is a stereotype of the sad comedian. Are you like that?
My ex grilfriend thinks I'm Asperger's. I live in my own little world, I guess.

In 2005 Rhod took over from Charlotte Church as the 'Voice of Wales' due to his 'honest, funny and welcoming' voice.
Named in The Times's Top 50 Comedians for 2006 alongside Ricky Gervais, Bill Bailey and Eddie Izzard, Rhod travelled to Iraq with a group of other comedians to entertain soldiers in Basra.
