Advice

Creating a Winning Sitcom

Susan Nickson

Susan Nickson

Susan is the writer and creator of the 大象传媒's hit sitcom 'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps', which is now in its sixth series. She has worked in the roles of creator, writer, producer and script editor in her time in the industry.

Here she talks about turning that little idea into a successful sitcom.

Q1. How did you become a comedy writer?

I started writing when I was 14 and I entered a competition. I think that's probably the best way into television comedy writing - through competitions...

Q2. How do you collate and develop your ideas?

I don't actually carry a notebook around with me as I am of the opinion that if you have had one good idea you are going to have another one.

Q3. How did 'Two Pints' go from idea to television show ?

I stole my friends lives, put it down on a piece of paper, sent it in and then it was a process of about two years of rewriting.

Q4. Is your writing autobiographical?

'Two Pints of Lager' started out as autobiographical but by series five you run out of funny things that have happened to you so you have to be a bit more creative.

Q5. What do you think makes a good comedy character?

I don't think there's any such thing as a great comedy character for everyone...

Q6. What advice would you give to budding comedy writers?

Listen to the advice of people who have already been there.
