Advice

The author of The Dream Travellers shares her skills

Sherry Ashworth

Sherry Ashworth

Sherry Ashworth has been writing for over fifteen years both for adults and for young people, though most recently it's been her work for teenagers that has become her passion.

In this interview Sherry talks about how she got into writing and what inspires her. She also offers up some tips on character creation and getting the confidence to write.

Q1. How did you start writing?

I started writing as a child, not in school...it was a development from being the bossy one in my group of friends, I would tell everybody who to be in our make-believe stories...then I began to write them down.

Q2. What inspires you to write?

In general what inspires me to write is 'life', but there's always different starting points...it's a magic process...everyone has a story to tell.

Q3. How easy is it to give writing tips?

Giving writing tips is not difficult, there are lots of them..sometimes it's just a matter of confidence...if you've got that itch to write, just do it.

Q4. How do you create characters?

Creating characters is one of the most fun things in writing...to be able to build up someone who isn't you is actually much easier than you think.

Q5. Is it important for writers to be widely read?

It's important to read as many different books by as many different writers as possible...to develop your own writing you'll get many ideas by reading widely...and reading dangerously!
