Panos Karnezis

Panos Karnezis

In part three of our interview with contemporary author Panos Karnezis you can find out how he starts a piece of writing as well as how he deals with rejection.

Part one - Becoming a writer, novels vs short stories.
Part two - Structure, character development, settings.
Part four - Advice for new writers.

Q1. Do you begin a story knowing whether it will be a novel or short story?

Because of the pace you know whether something is going to be a novel or a short story... I think you know by the first paragraph whether it's going to be a story or a novel.

Q2. Do you have set times where you sit down and write?

I try to write every day, five days a week, and not at weekends. I usually write a page a day...

Q3. How did you come to get your work broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio?

The first story that was read on the radio was from Little Infamies, my first book of short stories. Since then I have been asked to write for radio. It is a good exercise for a writer to try and be as concise as possible.

Q4. Are there any specific skills required to be successful at writing?

I think a writer has to be very observant. There are things I write in stories and later on I realise 鈥淚 wrote this because of such and such.鈥 Observational skills are very important, which is why you have to spend so much time on your own.

Q5. Is there any of your work that you are especially proud of or that is especially important to you?

I鈥檓 proud of my first book, Little Infamies. I suspect it will always have a special place in my heart.
