Today, more than at any other time during our history we are traveling to places and spaces that our parents, let alone our grandparents would never have dreamt of going.

David Gallant has been fortunate enough to have been actively involved in this search for new horizons, and has recorded his experiences over the years with his camera.

The advent of the Global Positioning Satellite has enabled Gallant to plot his position on the surface of the earth whilst taking his photographs with extraordinary accuracy.

The data that describes the position forms the title of each image allowing others the possibility of traveling to the exact location (within 15 feet) and experiencing the same scene for themselves. But will they?

Even if the observer stands on the exact spot as Gallant, will they, as the interpreter, turn through 180 degrees or 90, or any other percentage and see a very different view?

David Gallant describes himself as "the antithesis of the 'travel' photographer".

He has always attempted to record a more personal relationship with each new environment, whether on a commissioned basis for international clients or under his own steam.

His work is held in various collections at home and abroad and can be easily identified by it's expansive yet graphic form, together with a highly sophisticated colour palette.

You can catch Points of Reference at the Norwich Arts Centre from Monday 29th March - Saturday 15th May, 2004.
