A
pregnant Florence |
O
is for octopus - and for one in particular; Florence.
Florence made headlines after accomplishing the rare feat of breeding
whilst in captivity.
Florence was found to be pregnant in December 2000, following
her arrival in Norfolk from Florida.
A
little snip to freedom |
The
public immediately took the octopus to their hearts.
Thousands of extra visitors poured into the garden centre at Fakenham
to catch sight of the amazing mum, after she had laid her 60
eggs and they began to hatch.
In the wild, the mother stops eating while brooding her eggs
and does not survive after they hatch, as they do not have the energy
to hunt.
During her weeks in the limelight, her followers had their hopes
raised that she would defy nature as she began to feed and gain
strength.

But Norfolk's famous multi-legged mum finally succumbed to the forces
of nature.
Her 50th baby emerged from its sac on February 12 and Florence died
that afternoon. It is believed she died from exhaustion.
