 As
Lewis' father became involved with the Home Rule debate and
politics, he sent his son away from his beloved Little Lea
to a boarding school in England. A homesick Lewis attended
a succession of boys-only public schools, where he was bullied.
He dubbed one school 'a concentration camp' and hated all
of them. His experiences are reflected in his writing - several
of his characters experience bullying.
'The bare brick passages
echoed to the continual trap of feet, punctuated with wild
cat calls, scrimmages, gusty laughter. I was always 'moving
on' or 'hanging about'. It was like living permanently in
a large railway station.' CS Lewis
His schooling turned Lewis against accepted
rules and regulations. He began to turn his back on religion,
declaring that God was just a myth. He was angry with his
father for sending him away to school and God for not taking
care of his mother.
