KILFENNAN VALLEY PARK
On the edge of Nelson
Drive, the Kilfennan Valley Park is an important area of
greenery and relaxation for the people of Caw. At the entrance,
beside a playground, there was an uninspiring patch of
grass which was transformed on June 6th.

- SPRINGWATCH BOOTCAMP
Ivan Black from the Conservation Volunteers held a boot camp at their base in
Gransha Wood, showing residents some of the basic skills they would be using
the following week.
Jim Arbuckle went along to hear from Ivan about what was
happening. Listen the
report.
KILFENNAN - SWAT
PROJECT
After creating the Butterfly garden in Strathfoyle that
morning, the Conservation Volunteers NI and their SWAT
Team were on site again at 1pm in Kilfennan at the entrance
to Valley Park, where a patch of grass at the park鈥檚
entrance was to be transformed into a Breathing Place to
encourage wildlife biodiversity back into that corner of
the park. The SWAT Team began by clearing a patch of grass,
leaving a large circle ready for the planting of the garden.
It took the design of a cart wheel, where 5 sections of
the wheel were planted with various plants, each section
to be looked after by a particular group in the local community.
A tree was planted in its centre. The removed turf was
placed at the other side of the park鈥檚 entrance and
placed on the bank in the design of a face, rising up from
the ground. While the SWAT Team busied themselves with
this creation, local residents rolled up their sleeves
and painted the wooden fence all around the entrance to
Kilfennan Valley Park.
Events were run in the park by a number
of partner agencies including the Ulster Wildlife Trust,
the Woodland Trust and the Loughs Agency. Martin Moloney
and his birds of prey set the scene and 大象传媒 Radio Foyle's
Mark Patterson show was there in the afternoon for a live
outside broadcast.
As the clock ticked nearer 5pm, the
SWAT Team pulled out all the stops to ensure the garden was
completed in time. The local community had a special cake
to toast their new garden and thank all the volunteers for
their tremendous effort. Take a look at the photos to see
what the SWAT Team have achieved.
