Robin Hood and Blidworth

Blidworth has many associations with Robin Hood including Will Scarlet's grave.

Will Scarlet's grave, Blidworth

Traditionally, Will Scarlet is buried here in the churchyard; though - of course - no solid proof exists.

Scarlett was not the outlaw's real name for obvious reasons, and in the old ballad we see him in trouble from the Sheriff's men but never killed.

Will also has a tradition of being related to Robin Hood, in one case his nephew (which means Robin had a sister!).

In Blidworth, a local legend holds that Maid Marian stayed in a cottage - roughly opposite the tavern - until Will called for her and escorted the girl to her marriage with Robin Hood.

Will's grave is marked by a fragment of the old church and several yew trees.

Blidworth was raided by outlaws from Derbyshire in the 13th Century; the outlaws had been and gone back to Derbyshire before news of the attack reached the Sheriff at Nottingham Castle. Many more stories and legends are associated with Blidworth.

Blacke Dickon's tour of Robin Hood's county

Robin Hood expert, Richard Rutherford-Moore in the guise of one of the Sherwood Foresters takes us to Blidworth.

Blacke Dickon: "Will Scarlet was killed trying to draw off a hoard of Sheriff's men from Robin and Little John. Because he was an outlaw he was buried outside the church in Blidworth."
