Robin Hood came to St. Mary's suffering from withdrawal symptoms having not been to mass for a fortnight. He was noticed by a monk who had previously been robbed by the hooded man who reported him to the Sheriff of Nottingham. The story came to be known as 'Robin Hood and the Monk'. Robin tried to escape and actually broke his sword over the Sheriff's helmet. He was dragged off and incarcerated. Some people say Robin escaped using a tunnel but that's a modern myth. Blacke Dickon's tour of Robin Hood's countyOne of the Sherwood Foresters, Blacke Dickon, takes us to St Mary's. Blacke Dickon: "This porch is traditionally where the Sheriff of Nottingham caught Robin Hood in one of the earliest Robin Hood stories... Robin Hood and the Monk."
