大象传媒 THREE Winter 2005
Bionic Buildings: the Gherkin skyscraper, London

大象传媒 THREE - Winter highlights 2005

Bionic Buildings

Spiders spin thread as strong as steel, termites build intricate airway systems so they can survive the harsh environment of the desert.

Over 3.8 billion years nature has become the ultimate designer. Plants and animals have solved problems that allow them to flourish in the most extreme environments.

Charlie Luxton, designer and TV presenter, explores how architects and engineers are beginning to turn to nature for inspiration when designing buildings.

Along the way Luxton discovers buildings that tan on a sunny day or mimic the swaying of a forest in the wind.

We look at the freedom tower which twists like a sunflower to catch available energy and see how the next generation of factories will have more in common with an ecosystem than the smokestacks of the past.

If we follow the lessons from nature the bionic buildings of the future may well be built by artificial termites and be located on Mars!
